OUR STORY

A group of children playing outside a white two-story building with a dark door, surrounded by trees and greenhouses in the background.

The Fieldfare was started by us, Rosie and Chris, and can be found in the courtyard of Teign Valley Nursery, a small, family-owned rural nursery that has been in the same family for generations. The site is an old mill, with the leat running right through the nursery, and the River Teign bordering the grounds.

The land is wild, with resident deer, hares and birds of prey, as well as an abundance of house martins that nest in the eaves during the summer months.

It’s a special spot that has been home to Rosie’s art studio for almost three years. Chris was an arborist before starting The Fieldfare, but when the chance came up to start the café, it seemed like a lovely way for us to work together.

We decided on a vintage horsebox to house the café and bought one that belonged to a lovely couple in East Sussex that was pretty much ready to go. She just needed a bit of TLC and a re-spray. Chris also made the shelf at the front from a great piece of locally felled timber.

We knew we wanted to use local suppliers, so Roastworks was our first port of call who supply our coffee. They’re owned by our friends from college, Will and Caroline, and roast the beans using vintage machines just up the road near Cullompton. They also recommended a coffee machine and grinder to get the most out of the beans.

We also serve a selection of Luscombe Drinks, and the cakes are made locally by Exploding Bakery and Truly Treats in Kingsteignton, who supply cakes to the National Trust.

We look forward to welcoming you to our corner of the valley.
